# How To Play RankFour

Both players prepare their questions and four-choice rankings at the start. Then take turns guessing each other's order and comparing answers.

## Start a game with a friend

1. Enter a name and choose Create Room. A nickname is fine.

2. Send your friend the invite link or six-character room code. They open RankFour, enter their name and join your room.

3. Choose 4, 6, 8 or 10 rounds. Six rounds is the default. You each get the same number of turns ranking and guessing. Every round has unlimited answer time.

4. When you are both connected, the host starts the game.

## Prepare, guess, then reveal

Both players prepare half the chosen rounds before play begins: three questions each in a six-round game. For every question, enter exactly four different choices in ranked order, from first to fourth. Say how you will rank them, such as favourite first. Your editable drafts stay private in this browser tab.

Type before or after your fixed name badge to build the question. For example, Rank before Alex's and favourite breakfasts after it make Rank Alex's favourite breakfasts. Check the full question preview; its 180-character limit includes your name. Each choice can have up to 80 characters.

Work on one question at a time and use the round buttons to review them. The arrows move a whole round earlier or later. Drag choices or open Reorder Choices for move buttons. An X clears a field so you can replace its text without deleting the round.

Lock In All Rounds saves your questions and rankings privately. Play begins when both players finish setup. The first ranker is chosen at random; their friend receives that question and shuffled choices, then drags or moves them into a predicted order and submits the guess.

Your friend predicts your order, rather than choosing their own favourites. Both answers stay hidden until the round ends, and you cannot change an answer after submitting it.

When both answers are in, the game reveals them side by side. The guesser earns the round points. You both press Ready to continue, then swap roles and open the next saved question automatically.

## Four positions, four possible points

You earn one point for each choice in the same position as your friend's ranking. Every round is scored out of 4. A perfect order scores 4 out of 4.

For example, your friend ranks Pancakes, Waffles, French toast, then Porridge. You guess Waffles, Pancakes, French toast, then Porridge. French toast and Porridge are in the correct positions, so you score 2 out of 4.

## Winning and tied scores

After the chosen rounds, the player with the higher total wins. Each player keeps the points earned while guessing.

A tie asks each player to prepare one fresh question for a two-round tie-break. You each rank once and guess once. The higher score across those two rounds wins the match. If those scores are also tied, prepare another question each and play another pair. Tie-break scores stay separate from the main totals. Both players submit before a round is scored.

## Taking your time

There is no timer for setting up your questions or submitting a guess. Answers appear only when both players submit. After comparing them, each player presses Ready. The next saved question waits for both of you.

If you lose your connection, reopen the same room in the same browser to reconnect. Locked question batches, answers and Ready status are saved. Unsubmitted setup drafts recover after a refresh in the same tab; keep that tab open until you lock in.
