How many people can play?
Each room has exactly two players. One person ranks the four choices and the other guesses, then the roles alternate. RankFour does not have a solo mode or an AI opponent.
Is RankFour free, and do I need an account?
RankFour is free to play. You enter a name and create or join a room. You do not need an account, email address or password. A nickname works.
Can we play from different places?
Yes. Open RankFour on your own phones or computers and join the same room using its invite link or code. Both players need an internet connection to play.
Can I write my own questions?
Yes. Both players prepare half the chosen rounds at the start, each with one question or prompt and exactly four different choices in secret ranked order. Type before or after your fixed name badge and check the preview. Move whole rounds with the arrows, drag or move choices, and clear individual fields with X. Lock In All Rounds saves your batch privately and fixes its questions and rankings. Play begins when both players finish; each question is shared when its round opens. A tied game asks you both for one fresh question per tie-break pair.
How are points scored?
Each choice in the exact same position as your friend's ranking earns one point, for a maximum of four points per round. Swapping only the top two choices leaves two correct positions and scores 2 out of 4.
How many rounds are there, and is there a timer?
The host can choose 4, 6, 8 or 10 rounds before starting. Six is the default, so you each rank and guess three times. All rounds are unlimited. Both players press Ready after each result to continue. Tied totals lead to pairs of tie-break rounds, giving each player one turn to guess.
Can I come back after closing the tab?
Open the room again in the same browser. RankFour saves your room access on that device so you can reconnect, and locked question batches, answers and Ready status stay saved on the server. Unsubmitted question drafts are saved only in the current tab, so keep it open until you lock in. If you clear site data, use a different browser or leave the room, you can lose access. Rooms expire after 30 days without game activity.
Why does a room say it is full or has expired?
A room accepts two players. If both seats are taken, ask your friend to create another room. An expired room cannot be reopened; create a new one. Share invite links only with the person you want to play with.
Do I need to install the app or allow notifications?
You can play in your browser. Installation on your home screen is optional. Where your browser supports it, you can also turn on room notifications in the app settings. Notifications need your permission, and you can switch them off again. Gameplay needs an internet connection even when the app is installed.
Does RankFour use cookies or save my answers?
RankFour does not set cookies or include advertising or analytics scripts. It uses browser storage to remember your name and room access, and tab storage for editable drafts. Locking in saves your prepared questions and rankings privately on the server, along with room information, answers and results. Your opponent sees each question when its round opens and your ranking at reveal. Room data is deleted after 30 days of inactivity.
